Chatbot Analytics for Small Business: What to Track (and What to Ignore)

Most chatbot analytics dashboards show you 20 metrics. You need 5.

Here's what actually matters for a small business owner — and what's just noise.

The 5 Metrics That Matter

1. Leads captured

The most important number. How many visitors left their name and email? If this is zero, your chatbot is not working as a business tool — it's a FAQ widget.

2. Conversations started

How many visitors engaged at all? A high conversation count with zero leads means people are chatting but not converting. Look at what they're asking.

3. Top questions asked

What do your visitors want to know? This tells you what's missing from your website, what to put in your next email, and what objections to address in your sales process.

4. Unanswered questions

Questions your chatbot couldn't answer. This is your knowledge base gap list. Every unanswered question is a missed lead.

5. Conversation-to-lead rate

What percentage of conversations result in a lead? Below 10% means your chatbot isn't qualifying visitors effectively. Above 20% means it's working well.

The 3 Metrics to Ignore

Sessions and page views

Your chatbot analytics platform is not a web analytics tool. Don't confuse the two. If you want page view data, use Google Analytics.

Average session duration

Longer conversations are not always better. A visitor who gets their question answered in 2 exchanges and leaves their email is more valuable than one who chats for 10 minutes and leaves.

Bot accuracy score

Most platforms report a vague "accuracy" metric. It's computed differently on every platform and tells you nothing actionable. Track unanswered questions instead — that's the actionable version.

How to Get Chatbot Analytics Without Logging In

The problem with most chatbot analytics dashboards is that you have to remember to log in. You won't. You're running a business.

Optimly solves this with automated weekly email reports. Every Monday, you get:

  • Leads captured last week
  • Total conversations
  • Top 5 questions asked
  • Questions the AI employee couldn't answer

No dashboard. No log-in. Just the numbers that matter, delivered to your inbox.

Setting Up Chatbot Analytics in 5 Minutes

If you're using Optimly, analytics are on by default. There's nothing to configure. Every conversation is logged, leads are captured automatically, and your weekly report starts from day one.

If you're using a different platform and want to add analytics, see: Integrating Chatbot Analytics with Your Platform.

The Only Question That Matters

At the end of each week, ask yourself one question: did my AI employee capture more leads than last week?

If yes: keep going. If no: look at the unanswered questions list and fix your knowledge base.

That's the whole analytics workflow for a small business chatbot.
