What Your Portfolio Visitors Are Actually Asking (When You're Not Looking)

When you add a conversational agent to your portfolio, you find out something uncomfortable: your static site wasn't answering the questions people actually had.

Here's what visitors ask persona agents on freelancer and consultant portfolios — and what those questions reveal about what's missing from most portfolio websites.


The questions nobody told you they were asking

About availability (the most common category)

  • "Are you available for a project starting in July?"
  • "Do you take on projects under $5,000?"
  • "Are you available for a one-day workshop?"
  • "Can you take on two clients at once?"

These are decision-gate questions. If the answer is no, the prospect moves on. If the answer is yes, they reach out. A static portfolio has no way to answer them — so the prospect either sends a speculative email (low effort = low intent) or closes the tab.

About scope and process

  • "Do you work with non-profits?"
  • "Can you work in our timezone?"
  • "Do you do fixed-price or time-and-materials?"
  • "What does your onboarding process look like?"
  • "How long does a typical project take?"

These questions come from prospects who are genuinely considering you — not window shopping. They want specific answers before committing to a discovery call. A portfolio that can't answer them loses those leads silently.

About specific work

  • "Do you have experience in healthcare?"
  • "Can you show me your e-commerce work?"
  • "Have you worked with B2B SaaS companies?"
  • "Do you have examples of dashboard design?"

These are the questions that surface when someone's already interested and wants confirmation. The agent responds with the relevant project links as clickable cards. Without an agent, the visitor has to scroll your entire portfolio hoping to find the right examples.

The odd-but-genuine ones

  • "Do you speak Spanish?"
  • "Are you open to equity compensation?"
  • "Have you ever worked with a team of 3 people?"
  • "What tools do you use for handoff?"

These are the questions that reveal a visitor with a very specific situation — and a very specific reason to reach out or not. A static portfolio almost never answers them. An agent can, because you can add them to your profile documents.


What this tells you about your portfolio

Most portfolio websites are built to impress, not to answer. They show work. They describe experience in general terms. They have a contact form.

But the questions above aren't about being impressed. They're about fit. A prospect who finds you impressive but can't figure out if you're available, affordable, or experienced in their industry will not reach out. The friction is invisible to you because it never produces a message.

What to do with this information

The questions your visitors ask become a roadmap for what your portfolio is missing.

If half the questions are about availability, your site needs a clearer availability signal — whether that's the agent, a banner, or a dedicated page.

If people keep asking about a specific industry ("do you work with healthcare companies?"), that's a keyword and a content opportunity.

If people ask "what does it cost?" and your site says nothing about pricing, that's a conversion problem with an easy fix.
